Why You Need To Be Really Selfish At Work

One of my biggest jobs as a coach is to help my clients figure out what's NOT working in their business or career so they can actually grow.

I'm constantly questioning their status quo at work and challenging ANYTHING that makes things more difficult. “Success without exhaustion" is a living mantra for me - I can't stand systems, habits or ways of operating that don't make sense and don't support a woman's ability to really thrive professionally.

Of course, I get some resistance from clients when I question them. I hear "no one does it that way" or "it's the industry standard" or "my clients will never stand for that".

And while I don’t battle, I’m very clear that if they – or YOU – follow the crowd out of fear that you’ll lose business or hurt your career, your growth can definitely suffer in the process.

So here are 3 things to help make your work fit YOU first.

Work where it makes sense

I’ve always worked from home as I run a virtual business (more on that in a minute) and have never wanted (or needed) the overhead of regular office space. When I started working with more local clients in L.A., I was happy because I LOVE meeting in person…but it was also time consuming and harder to balance with the rest of my schedule.

So I started doing meetings in one spot exclusively - a gorgeous hotel lobby overlooking the beach - and offered clients the chance to do one "live" session per month with alternate sessions done virtually. This worked great for me as I can easily get there from home - and great for my clients to meet me for a nice “coffee, tea & coaching” in a lovely environment.

If a hotel lobby doesn’t work for you, you can use a co-working space (I actually just joined one with a very flex membership), a conference or meeting room or find another nice public space you like.

No matter what, adapt your environment so it works for you - and you'll be happier and more effective.

Work when it makes sense

Having control over your schedule is HUGE when it comes to managing overwhelm and being at your professional best.

Everyone’s different when it comes to their ideal schedule and, depending on your situation, you may have more or less control over your time. But having coached thousands of high-level, ultra-busy women – many who’ve felt like slaves to their schedules - I can tell you that everyone can tweak their time for the better.

Whether it’s setting clear office hours, actually using your vacation time, blocking days for certain activities or running programs fall through spring only (so you’re OFF in summer), taking charge of your calendar is work/life changing.

I’ve helped clients negotiate four day work weeks, hybrid telecommuting schedules and more. For me, it’s no nights, weekends or Wednesdays, unless I feel like it ;).

Work virtually when you can

When I started as a coach and was introduced to the virtual concept, I thought the idea sounded good, but there was no way I'd actually do it myself.

Coming from a therapy background, I thought I'd never be able to really connect or sense my intuition…oh, I was wrong! Not only do I LOVE coaching virtually but I’ve created deep connection with clients - and sometimes I’m even MORE intuitive because I’m paying more attention internally than externally.

Working virtually cuts down on commute time, expands your market and gives you the chance to literally work from anywhere. Ten years ago, I actually moved my entire business from Chicago to Los Angeles without losing ONE client or ONE penny of income - amazing!

I've helped financial planners, fitness professionals, designers and more transition some or all of their business to a virtual model to open up their market and consolidate their time - so they can serve more and stress less. One of my clients actually had to work from home (due to injury) and since she got so much done and increased revenue for her company, she switched to a blended home/office workweek from that point on.

Moral of the story, remember that YOU are the core of your business and career success – and anything that helps you operate better, makes your work better.
