Desire, Fear & Pursuing Your Dreams

Women at work conference

With so much upheaval in the past several years, many women have taken a stand for themselves by shaking things up and changing the rules both at work and at home.

Maybe you’re ready to break the mold and try something different too - like doing work you love instead of work you tolerate, creating success on your own terms in your job or business or changing your lifestyle so that it finally fits you.

With any desire, there’s usually some fear…because untapped potential can be daunting. Even change for the better can make us anxious, simply because we’ve never experienced the success or happiness we imagine.

So if you’re ready to pursue your dreams, here are some things to consider.

Claim your desire

While many clients I coach come to me to explore what they really want, many already know. Often with just a few questions, they’re able to connect with and reveal their true wishes…even if that doesn’t fit a typical work or life path.

Your desire is that thing that feels too big or too easy or too wonderful.

It’s the idea you keep secret or share with a select few.

It’s the activity that thrills you but could never be your J.O.B.

It’s the version of your work and life that feels just right but beyond your reach.

Claiming your desire means bringing your dreams to reality. It means acknowledging, sharing and taking action on ideas that may have simmered inside you for years.

You can take baby steps, but it’s important to prioritize what you want. This isn’t about ignoring your responsibilities, it’s about allowing what’s in your heart to take precedence in your life.

Let it be scary

Our upper limits around success, happiness, money and more are protected by fear for a reason.

We get scared not because working and living the way we want isn’t right for us, but because it’s new to us…and fear’s job is to be wary of anything unfamiliar.

If you notice yourself holding back on your dreams, that’s normal. Fear suppresses our goals and good intentions in an attempt to ensure our safety.

But fear doesn’t show up to stay, it shows up to leave. Each time it shows, know that the change you’re working on is significant…otherwise, fear wouldn’t need to be there. And each time it shows, you have the chance to learn how to move through it more easily.

Your fear can even serve your dream process by shedding light on potential problems and letting you know where you need support. So know that fear can be your ally in change, if you let it.

Get comfortable with more

I was asked years ago what I thought the biggest challenge for women was when it came to success and I answered, “making more without doing more”. This is a major mindset shift for most women and it’s where I spend much of my time as a coach.

It can take time to get comfortable with things being great…like raising your income while having fun or allowing work to be easy by staying in your lane and focusing on your genius.

Your greatest level of success and happiness is meant to feel normal to you…but if you haven’t experienced it, you need a chance to get acclimated. You are naturally designed to thrive and your desires exist to help you along the path and keep you connected to what’s best for you.

So here’s your permission to trust what you want and take steps to create the work and life you imagine. When you make a choice to move through your fears and live your dreams, it's like giving yourself a little bit of heaven on earth.
