When Success Is Stuck In Neutral

Women at work conference

The foundation for what I do as a coach is helping women to get clear on their vision and make that vision a reality.

For some, that means a career change. For others, it means a new business. For most, it means reshaping their work and their life so they’re more successful, more effective and much happier.

Making a vision into reality sounds like a tall order…and it certainly can be. While the experience is different for everyone, the process can be wonderful, exciting and, at times, frustrating.

The hardest part of creating our ultimate work and life is when our intentions and actions are strong but our progress gets stalled. We're in a holding pattern - and not because we're keeping ourselves there but because things aren't happening as we’d like.

We're waiting too long on a job offer. A colleague sidelines our project. Our outreach gets a lukewarm response.

We need some RESULTS.

While waiting can be challenging, we always have choices. Here are some ways to manage in the meantime.

Redirect your energy

Having multiple things to focus on can help us to be less attached to each piece. When you're hooked on something happening (and happening NOW), it’s easy to get annoyed.

So think about other ways to achieve your goal - or find something you can accomplish that will make you feel good (literally anything) - and put your efforts there.

If you're waiting to hear back from a potential employer, start networking with new connections. If a prospect or project is "on hold", reach out to others or start planning your next move.

As I say to clients "just go back to your list"...and yes, having a list can help too ;).

Revisit your vision

Revisiting your vision is about stepping back from the details to remember why your dreams even matter. When you think about what initially inspired you and imagine how it will feel when you’ve reached your goal, it can do wonders for your motivation.

When my clients need to reconnect with their vision, I’ll simply ask them to talk about it. With a little time and encouragement, their energy always shifts. I might even ask how they’d feel if they gave up on their vision and, without fail, they become more committed.

You can talk about your vision with a friend, colleague or family member…just be sure to choose those people wisely.

If you’re on your own, simply spend some time writing. Find a comfortable spot, make the process easy (I prefer notes to elaborate vision boards) and give yourself space to dream.

Relax and enjoy

When things really aren’t working, it can help to disconnect and enjoy.

We often end up overworking to try to move things along…but what if our extra time is a gift and we decide to play?!

For most women, balance is part of the vision; it's the permission around it that can be tricky.

So here’s your permission to step back, take a break and have some fun when it feels like everything is stalling. Notice how your mood changes as a result…and don’t be surprised if you start getting results too.
